Will My Tires Pass Maryland State Inspection? A Simple Guide for Drivers

Buying a used car or transferring a title in Maryland means passing a state safety inspection, and tires are one of the most common reasons a vehicle gets flagged. Here's what inspectors actually look at so you're not caught off guard.

Maryland requires a minimum tread depth of 2/32 of an inch. An easy home check: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is too low and the tire will fail.

Inspectors reject tires with visible cord or fabric, cuts deep enough to expose the body plies, bulges, or improper repairs. Any of these are automatic failures because they're genuine safety hazards.

Your tires need to be the correct size for the vehicle and free of dangerous mismatches. Oversized tires that rub or extend beyond the fenders can also cause a rejection.
